He was I believe, 6th wave to land, being part of the Army Corp Of Engineers he was deemed “too valuable” to put on the front lines. He saw, as he said, lots of body bags on the beach that day. Not having to see combat did not stop his crazy ass from still volunteering for several missions including one that earned him the purple heart which led to him carrying shrapnel in his knees for the rest of his life.
